Hossler steps up in California

Freshman Beau Hossler led Texas to an eighth-place finish this weekend at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., gaining his first collegiate top-five finish in a third-place tie.

Freshman Gavin Hall followed, carding a 4-over finish for 26th place. Junior Brax McCarthy finished in 48th.

Bringing up the rear in the team’s last regular season tournament, senior Toni Hakula and sophomore Kramer Hickok finished in 50th and 54th, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Will Griffin shot a 73 in the final round to claim 69th place, in a tournament that counts the best five of six players’ scores.

Stanford utterly smashed the competition, earning the team championship by a 16-stroke margin.

The Longhorns will defend their conference title back in Trinity at the Big 12 Championship on April 25-27.

Women’s tennis fails to clinch top-two seed against Oklahoma State

Changing the lineup Sunday against Oklahoma State resulted in a tough 4-3 loss for Texas, as the Big 12 tournament approaches.

Sunday, against the Cowgirls, junior Lina Padegimaite replaced sophomore Breaunna Addison at No. 1 doubles with senior Elizabeth Begley, but the duo lost 8-1. Playing at second singles, freshman Ratnika Batra improved to 8-0 in the Big 12 after defeating freshman Megan McCray 6-4, 6-2.

Raindrops fell twice during the match before a third drizzle delayed the contest, with OSU up 2-1. When play resumed, Texas pulled even with Padegimaite’s win at fifth singles. The Cowgirls won two of the last three matches in three sets each to clinch the contest, 4-3.

The defeat prevented Texas from clinching a top-two seed in the conference tournament, but the Longhorns’ weekend was not a complete loss. They defeated Oklahoma 5-2 Friday. After losing the doubles point, Addison and three freshmen won their singles contests to clinch the match for Texas.
