Texas men's golf begins strong at Stanford Classic tournament

The Texas Longhorns men’s golf team got off to a strong start at the Stanford Classic at Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, Calif., winning each of its matchups in the first round against Michigan.

No. 2 Texas, a top seed at the event, handled the Wolverines in Monday’s opening round of action. The first round followed a match play four-ball format, with the best ball being played.

Six Longhorns competed for Texas in the event as three pairs of two competed against the Wolverines. Sophomore Jordan Spieth was paired with junior Toni Hakula, senior Julio Vegas played with sophomore Kramer Hickok and juniors Cody Gribble and Johnathan Schnitzer matched up together.

Each pair of Longhorns was able to come out on top in the first round of match play, with Texas topping eight seed Michigan with a team total of 12 to 0. Texas was the only team to sweep the first round.

Washington, the second seed in the tournament, fell to seven seed Stanford by a team total score of 10-2. In addition, Duke topped USC 9 ½ to 2 ½, and UCLA defeated Georgia 8 ½ to 3 ½.

The tournament will be completed Tuesday, with the final round consisting of singles matches.
