Reports indicate police have detained subject

Texas A&M University Police are responding to reports of a possible campus gunman.

A campus bus driver saw an individual carrying what he thought was a rifle near Rudder Tower at about 4 p.m., said university spokesman Lane Stephenson.

“It’s just one report,” Stephenson said. “We just had a report that the university police have found no indication of a crime done.”

Nearly 40 minutes later, university officials declared a code maroon — asking students, faculty and staff to take shelter. Stephenson said campus police alerted other local law enforcement agencies.

Reports indicate the gunman may have been detained, but police could not confirm it. Police believe the gunman could have misunderstood what was happening, but still ask that students remain sheltered until they investigate every avenue.

According to the Associated Press, former President George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush were scheduled to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the George Bush Presidential Library Center on campus at 5p.m.
