University President Gregory Fenves released a statement Friday afternoon due to backlash from keeping UT professor Richard Morrisett on staff after he plead guilty to felony charges.

Fenves said the University would work to clarify its policies, which determine if off-campus conduct impacts an employee’s on-campus duties, after an Austin-American Statesman investigation revealed UT’s response to Morrisett’s incident.

However, Fenves said it is time to change those policies and make them clearer.

“Violent action by any member of the university community is unacceptable,” Fenves said in the statement, which was posted online. “This episode shows we need to explicitly define conduct that is subject to discipline, including possible termination, regardless of whether it occurs on or off campus.”

The Provost’s Office, Human Resources and the Office of Legal Affairs is going to develop recommendations within the next two months, Fenves said. In addition, the entire University will be required to enforce the policy requiring any arrests be reported to their supervisor.
